DON'T TAP THE GLASS

Tyler, The Creator

Short and sweet.

Tyler has been on tour the past few months for his previous album, CHROMAKOPIA. He's known for his every 2-year album cycle, so last week, when he started teasing something, it was not expected to be a new album. He even put out multiple tweets suggesting to correct any hype or hopes that there would be a ton of rapping on this project.

I went into this album expecting songs like "Perfect", or maybe even a lot of the material from IGOR, but I was surprised to hear what was very much an 80s-inspired west coast album. Sure, he does have his softer songs like "Ring Ring Ring" and "I'll Take Care of You", but Tyler is rapping on this. Maybe it's not as in-depth as his previous albums, or even his Clipse feature, but it's not bad.

On the intro track, "Big Poe", he's rapping on a very N.E.R.D-inspired beat just shit-talking. Pharrell continues his great year by giving a great guest verse. A big part of the short rollout for the album was Tyler pushing heavily to dance to it and don't just sit down and listen to it. A lot of the music found on this project is uptempo and just fun music. "Sucka Free" is very Suga Free-coded in Tyler's voice and flow on it. The instrumental reminds me of the music your mom might play while she's cleaning the house.

"Stop Playing with Me" sounds like old Tyler, in that the beat is chaotic and in the lyrics he's being a bit more aggressive. He no longer has that simple teenage angst, so the rapping is more digestible and friendly, but he is still vulgar and funny. "Ring Ring Ring" is my favorite song on the album. The instrumental is straight out of a Michael Jackson album. The bassline is straight up "Off the Wall" and features one of his best choruses from him since "911".

"Ring-ring-ring-ring-ring-ring-ring-ring, pick up the phone / Hello?"

It shouldn't work, but it does so well. Not to mention the other features from both Madison McFerrin on "Don't You Worry Baby", and Yebba on "I'll Take Care of You", which are both great. In just under 30 minutes, Tyler is able to give you a very cohesive album that takes you to a place we once were. The last few months of the year are giving us some great music, excluding the Travis Scott album. I'm excited for what the rest of this year may bring.
